Louis Joseph Vance (1879-1933) was an American fiction writer and creator of Michael Lanyard, "The Lone Wolf". Born in New York, he studied to be an artist and illustrator. He married Nance Elizabeth Hodges in 1898. He produced pulp fiction for many years until achieving success with The Brass Bowl (1907) about a young girl in trouble and a dashing burglar, and The Black Bag (1908) which involves an heiress and a diamond smuggler. His greatest success was with the long Lone Wolf series, about a gentleman jewel thief.
